firmware version/build numbers

Sorry, but couldnt find any info in the knowledge base or the forum regarding this...

so

i already installed once SFOS 16.05.7 MR-7  but after ive decided it is not working for me i had to use SFOS 16.05.6 MR-6

Why it is offering me the same firmware to install it again ? Is it the same ? You cant tell from the GUI.

From the console - build 305 and from the web gui it offers HW-SFOS_16.05.7_MR-7.SF210-305 , so is the same ?

from the forum https://community.sophos.com/products/xg-firewall/f/sophos-xg-firewall-general-discussion/92679/sophos-support-recommended-xg-firewall-firmware-version

it says version HW-SFOS_16.05.7_MR-7.SF300-305 , but i dont see it released anywhere.

this thing just feels a bit confusing... sorry if iam wrong

  • Hi,

you have downgraded to the previous maintenance release and wonder why you are being offered the next maintenance release?

You haven't explained what is wrong with 5.7-mr7 that you had to downgrade to the previous version?

    Yes i am wondering...

So Sophos XG cant check if the same firmware is already installed inside the slot it wants to use ?

The question - how should i know if this is the next release ?

what Sophos XG means by the "next release" it offers for download/install ?

Is this the release after HW-SFOS_16.05.7_MR-7 or it is the release after HW-SFOS_16.05.6_MR-6 which i can't tell for sure which one was it, was it HW-SFOS_16.05.7_MR-7.SF210-305 or HW-SFOS_16.05.7_MR-7.SF300-305 or HW-SFOS_16.05.7_MR-7.SFXXX-305 it doesnt say from the gui or shell options

there is a thread for MR7 with comments what is not working.

I just wanted to get an answer like "Yes Sophos XG can't verify that it has already installed this same firmware inside the slot it is going to use and it will offer it to you untill you dont install it and boot it" or "no, this is different firmware, you already installed  SF100 build 305 and now it offers SF210, build 305".

I asked this because i dont see how one can be sure, which is which ... Which exact version i already installed, is the build number only changing, what SF210, SF300 means, is this per device ?

Probably i have to just install it again and check that my SMTP is not working again and stick a note somewhere that i have already tried this build... to not let the person after me install it again?

Anyway my question was about some elaboration on the build numbers. This .SF210, Sf300, build numbers/releases are never mentioned in the forum, only major firmware relases  Mr6, Mr7.

And that you cant tell which build number you have already installed, if its the latest or not...

  • Not sure what is left to answer, but as well as in the console, you can see your current firmware in the GUI, by clicking "Control Center" and then reading the Firmware under the large text at the top of the screen.

From your screenshots you are on 16.05.6 MR-6.

Because you are on this version, the appliance will offer you the next newest version (16.05.7 MR-7) - even though it is already downloaded to your secondary firmware slot.

Build numbers are internal use only - the only figure that matters is the third dot version - 16 (Major version) 05 (Minor Version) 7 (Point release/Maintenance release).

7 is the newest Maintenance release.

SF210/SF300 are to do with the hardware platform that the Firewall is based on. Similar to AMD, Intel etc. If using the 'auto download' feature, again you don't need to worry about this. If downloading firmware manually you need to pick the correct device.
