Realtek chipset vs Intel NICs (network speed)

I've heard that Sophos XG firewall Home on homebuilt  systems with Realtek chipsets (e.g. Zotac CI323) are supported by XG, but the speed would be much slower than systems with Intel NICs (e.g. Qotom)?

Is this true?

  • Let me try and be a bit more specific.

If you have a low speed internet connection (less than 25mb/s) then you will not notice.

If you have a high speed connections with lots of rues you will notice because most realtek nics off load to the CPU where as the intel nics process on chip, that is why Intel chips are more expensive.

  • Thanks for the fast reply!

I only have 2 rules in place and my current internet uplink is 100/20. My current UTM120 with XG home license get a throughput of 125/25 mbps.

The UTM120 only has a Atom singlecore processor and only 2Gb, *but* has Intel NICS and is not upgradeable.

I was wondering if buying a zotac zbox ci323 (quadcore celeron) with 8 Gb of RAM and a 120Gb SSD but with Realtek NICS, would get higher throughput than the UTM120?

The advantage of getting a zotac zbox is that after a few years, I can always convert it to a mediaplayer with hdmi.

Or maybe upgrading to a Sophos XG105 would be a better idea?
