Best hardware choice for XG firewall home: zotac zbox ci323 vs Sophos XG105rev2

What would the fastest hardware choice to install XG home on?

Specs:

Zotac Zbox ci323: quadcore celeron, 64gb ssd and 8gb DDR3L-1600 with (unfortunately)  2 Realtek nics.

Or

Sophos XG 105 rev.2 with 2Gb (expandable) with 4 intel NICS

Which one would give the best performance?

Other suggestions also appreciated!

  • Ok, but the XG105w can be upgraded also to 8Gb RAM.

So I meant it more from a processor and NIC perspective.

The XG has another processor (unknown to me) but Intel NICS.

The zotac zbox ci323 has a quad core celeron with AES support, but only Realtek NICS.

  • Mkr74,

I am not sure if upgrading the ram will not make the XG a sw version as happened with Utm. On utm if you add more ram, the sw checks it and says that it is not a hw version anymore.

So if you are using for home, go for a custom pc.

    Regards

  • If you go with home on an appliance, it's already a software image so RAM upgrades aren't an issue.

Just remember that you are limited to 6GB.  I've run the stock 2GB XG105 with home and it's sluggish.  Bumping the ram to 4GB and 8GB (6 usable) made an appreciable difference.

    Cheers

  • Would a zotac zbox ci323 or ci327 with ssd and 8Gb of RAM outperform a XG105 rev2 with 8b of RAM?

The zotac does not have Intel NICS, but does have a quadcore celeron. I've read somewhere that the absence of Intel NICs in the zotac zbox makes the network speed 40% less than that with intel NICs.

The XG105 does have Intel NICs!

    What do you guys think?

  • Not sure on performance between Intel and other NIC's.  I personally prefer and will only spec Intel NIC's where applicable/available.

FWIW, the XG105 uses a dual core Intel Atom E3826 (1.46Ghz).

  • Hmmm: the Atom e3826 is a really old processor with no so good specs:

The N3150 in the Zotac ci323 is much faster and newer, however the ci323 has realtek NICs.....
