Apologies in advance for the lengthy post but I want to be as detailed as possible because I'm tearing my hair out.
We have an Optus (Australian Company) ADSL2 connection. This currently connects through a Netgear DGN3700 unit, (combo modem/router) this service has a static wan IP address.
Looking in the current Netgear config settings i can see the following information:
Connection Type: PPPoE
Username: ******
Password: ******
Address: DHCP
DNS: Obtain Automatically
NAT: Enabbled
Multiplexing: LLC Based
VPI: 8
VCI: 35
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
Gateway IP: ********* (Automatically Populated)
DNS Entries: ******* (Automatically Obtained)
Our XG unit is setup in Gateway mode, and has its WAN port (Port 2) connected to one of the LAN ports on the Modem/Router in DHCP Mode The DHCP server is turned on on the router which hands out an address of 192.168.0.2 to the XG Unit. In turn the XG Unit has DHCP setup and hands out IP's to all of clients in the 172.16.16.0 range.
As luck would have it, we have two of the exact same routers one as a spare, so i have the second unit configured in Modem Only mode and i have Port 3 on the XG unit set up as WAN PPPoE. This allows me to quickly revert back to a working internet connection with just a plug change.
Port 3 interface settings
Zone:WAN
IP Assignment: PPPoE
Preferred IP: ******* (I have this set as our static WAN IP)
Gateway Name: Optus
Gateway IP: This is greyed out and unable to be changed
Username: **********
Password: **********
Everything else unchecked except for Schedule reconnect.
In the advanced settings:
Interface Speed: Auto Negotiation
MTU: 1492
MSS: 1440
Default MAC Address
So what i do is unplug the phone line from the router and plug it into the spare Netgear unit that is in Modem only mode. I then have an ethernet cable connected from Port 3 on the XG unit and connected into of the LAN ports on the Netgear.
The connection never connects. It just sits there on the interfaces type saying connecting. I've left it for 10 minutes and no luck.
I've tried various little settings changes but i just cannot get it to connect.
From my understanding the XG unit should be handling the connection with the username and password stored within it and the modem is just a middle device to house the physical plugs
This is problematic as we require port forwarding to be set up for a couple of devices to function properly and some remote cctv viewing situations but simply cant get it going
Going back to the first modem/router i even tried forwarding all ports to the IP of the XG unit but we still couldnt get the remote viewing of the cctv etc to work im guessing becuase of double NAT. Before we deployed the XG unit, these devices worked flawlessly with ports forwarded to the device IPs (Which are setup as static IP Devices)
If anyone can lend me a hand i would be super appreciative!
Thanks
