Android connectivity over Wifi

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing problems with Android phones and tablets when connecting via wifi?

Our Android clients report, connected but no internet. Even though browsing to websites actually works. Because the devices think they have no Wifi, things like App Store, google maps etc fail to load.

Our wifi network is comprised of Unifi Access points sitting behind an XG Firewall.

Addresses including that of the access points is given out by the XG's DHCP server.

As mentioned, the devices themselves actually do have internet connectivity as websites can be browsed and laptops that are connected to the same access points have no issue. But because the devices dont think they have internet connectivity its very limited. Wifi icon with an x through it)

It must be the way in which Android probes for an internet connection that is being blocked somewhere in the firewall.

I thought it may have been a DNS issue so i manually put the DNS Server 1 as the IP of the XG (As this is the default gateway on my network) and second DNS as 8.8.8.8 but still no luck

Any suggestions?

  • Hi Aditya,

    Thanks for your reply.

I checked the application and web filter logs and there is nothing under Block or Warn.

Looking at the XG DNS entries:

DNS1: 192.168.0.1 (This is my ISPs modem router IP address)

    DNS2: 8.8.8.8

My setup is as follows ISP Modem Router -> XG Firewall in Gateway mode -> Access points and switches.

The XG Unit gets an IP address from my ISP Modem Router (Which is a Negtear DGN3700) via DHCP, The XG unit then hands out DHCP address in the 172.16.16.0 range to all of our clients, access points etc

As mentioned i tried manually inputting the DNS entries of 172.16.16.16 (Which is the IP of my XG unit) and 8.8.8.8 but this still gave the same result.

From what i can deduce its not actually the traffic thats being blocked by the firewall (especially looking at the logs), but when android thinks it has no internet connection, things like the play store etc dont even attempt to load they just throw up an "Internet not connected error"

As a side note because my ISP Modem router is not in bridge mode and makes the PPPoE connection then the XG is a client this is leading to other network problems but for the life of me i cannot get PPPoE to work on the XG unit. But i will make a different thread for this issue.

  • Hi, since MR6 I do have the very same problem, but didn't have it before... (no problems like this with MR5). There has to some kind of change in the firmware to trigger this kind of weird behavior.
