ios authentication client only connects after using captive portal to connect wifi

My ios authentication client was previously working fine on my iPhone 7. Lately it fails to connect until I manually enter my username and password in the captive portal as the phone connects to a wifi network.

Previously it did the normal thing of cutting the connection when the phone went to sleep but I could reconnect just by opening the app.

Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone have a solution? I have uninstalled and reinstalled the client and re-downloaded the certificate.

One possibility is that this has occurred since updating the iphone to ios 10.3.2 as this was about the same time the new behaviour began.

  • Hi Dean ,

It would seem some issue that we are not aware of, I would recommend you to post the logs for your access server logs , Kindly access the advanced shell through SSH and go to the /log directory and run this command.

    Command: cat /log/access_server.log

Also, try to ping from the XG to your IOS device and check if there is a reply while the device is in standby/sleep.

  • I will keep an eye on this to be sure it is solved but it looks like the ios update (or my own clumsy fingers) turned off the "Ask to Join Networks" setting for the WiFi. When I turnedit back on things started to behave more like before.

  • Looks like the setting change didn't solve things. When I arrive home my phone stays on 4G and doesn't automatically switch to WiFi. When I manually select a WiFi SSID the SOPHOS captive portal screen pops up. I enter my username and password and I am authenticated but then I get this screen on the phone:

At this stage I am connected and can browse the internet. If I then go to the authentication client and login there it appears to log me out and then back in, as shown in this screenshot of the authentication log.

Notice the 2 events at 18:45:10, one is a logout and the other a login at the time when I opened the authentication client.

Over short periods of time the connection can be re-established just using the authentication client but if the phone goes off for a longer period then it is back to 4G and captive portal again. Switching WiFi SSID's also seems to trigger the captive portal.

There are 3 other iphones and 2 ipads in the house and they all work fine. I can't see any real difference in settings. They all seem to login fine according to the authentication log.

My WiFi is just an ASUS DSL-AC52U in access point mode connected to the LAN port on the XG firewall so I don't think it is getting in the way.
