XG Home: Staging in a VM and then moing to an UTM220

I have an UTM220 appliance which is working great but I keep running into the 50-IP limit so I would like to move to XG. But I want to set it up as a VM first so I can carefully create an identical configuration which can then be backed up and loaded into the UTM220 after installing the XG software appliance onto it.

Is this a good way to do this and has anyone done it before? Recommendations?

...or should I just retire the 220 and keep it as a VM (Dell R610 w/ Xeon L5609s, ESXi 6.0)?
