Why won't XG Home use more than 1 core on my Virtual Box VM?

Home setup: I have XG installed on a Virtual Box VM with 4 cores (host is 4 core i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz). XG is running fine but reports only one core in the console - won't recognise 4 cores.

Is this a limitation of Virtual Box? Or has someone got it working with 4 cores on a Virtual Box VM?

If it is a limitation of Virtual Box can someone suggest another VM platform? Don't really want to use vmware as I am only running a single server at home, and also control it from a Mac - there's no macos vmware client which makes vmware a pain in the butt. But I guess I'll go there if I have to.
