Used workstation for hosting XG?

Hi!

I'm looking to host XG at home for learning. I'm wondering if the any of the following specs would be considered viable for running with everything enabled on a 100/10 VDSL connection.

Processor: Intel i5-2400S 2,50 GHz (passmark 4908)
RAM: 4,0 GB

OR

Processor: Intel(R) Core i3-3240 CPU @ 3.40GHz (Passmark: 4287)
RAM:  4,0 GB

OR

Processor: Intel i5-2400S 2,50 GHz (passmark 4908)
RAM: 4,0 GB

Essentially, I'm looking for the most performance for the least power consumed. In the future I might consider virtualising the XG appliance with other stuff running as well, such as Plex or FreeNAS. All of these processor are sub-100W, so I suppose it would be rather cheap to run 24/7.

  • Also depends on what other features you have enabled and installed?

You will need to NICs, preferably intel or 3com

You will NOT need a display card.

Set your onboard display to use as little memory as you can.

I have speedstep enabled, I can get away with this because data service is 5/1 on a very good day.

If you find you cannot reach your provided link speed on a single thread with speedstep enabled try disabling it, power usage will go up but not by much.

Choose the newer of the processors.

XG for home use limits are 4 cpus and 6gb of ram, so if you have many users/devices the faster cpu might be of better value.
