Clients can not log in to WiFi broadcasted by AP50 but to same WiFi broadcasted by XG115w internal WiFi AP

Hi there,

a week ago I got a call from our branch office complaining that the WiFi upstairs is not working any more.

Downstairs I have a XG115w broadcasting a WiFi signal and upstairs a AP50 connected to Interface 4 of the XG115w broadcasting the same WiFi.

as often I can´t remember that I changed something on the XG but suddenly nobody is able to log into the WiFi upstairs any more.
It worked for about half a year now without any complaints ( downstairs signal is too weak to be seen upstairs that´s why we placed the AP 50 there ).

What I did already:

rebooted AP50
rebooted XG
checked logs

If you connect to the WiFi downstairs everything works fine.
If you do it upstairs you get no IP Address from DHCP and no connection to the WiFi is made.
I changed the config to only broadcast downstairs ... everything works.
I changed the config to only broadcast upstairs ( same DHCP settings etc ) and NOTHING works ( yes the AP broadcasts the WiFi, devices can see it ).

I configured two new WiFi Networks and added two new DHCP Servers and let the new WiFi Networks broadcast first only downstairs ( both worked ) then both upstairs ( none of the two worked ).

I then updated XG Firmware to 16.01.03 --- nothing changed.

Then I grabbed a spare XG in another office and connected an ap50 to it just and guess what ... same behavior there! Nothing working with AP50 broadcasting the Signal ... no DHCP lease seen in the XG and no IP shown on the device.
Then I upgraded the second the spare to 16.05.03 and did firmware upgrade on AP50 ... nothing changed!

I am not sure but I think I remember that I once did a firmware upgrade on the XG in the branch office and it could be that after that the issue rised ... but I am not sure ... but to me it seems to be the only thing that makes sense.

I already used Sophos Recovery tool for APs and rebuild the old firmware on the second AP 50 but as soon as it connects to the XG it loads Firmware 8 and it stops working.

Anyone any ideas why this happens, what I am missing ... and if I can delete / replace the AP50 firmware on the XG to an old version to see if this works?

Thanks!

Any idea apreciated!

  • Thomas,

the first think you can do is to check log under /var/tslog/wc_remote.log

I believe that the AP is broken. Contact the support or get another AP.

    Let us know.

    Regards

  • Thanks for the answer lferrara,

I´ll check the logs and see what I can find.

My first thought was the same as yours, the AP is broken ... but as I wrote I checked it with another XG & AP in a different site and I doubt that both APs are broken at the same time ...
So still I think I do have a firmware / configuration issue here ...

I´ll keep you posted after I checked the logs.

    Thomas

  • You can also check if the firewall is actually receiving dhcp request from the AP with simple tcpdump in advanced shell of the Sophos. The MAC Address of the devices is shown by tcpdump for do not make confusion with the others in downstairs wifi
