Both HA devices failed to boot

We just had an issue this morning where after a power failure, both HA devices failed to boot. Both reported that no boot device was found. After power cycling both devices 3 or 4 times they both booted successfully and are now working normally.

These are both SG210's running the latest XG 16 version. One of them required a re-image recently after it started reporting corrupt configuration but as far as I can tell they have been otherwise reliable.

I really need some confidence that these are going to boot correctly next time they get rebooted. Should I RA them both or is there a known fix?

  • Hi jamesharper,

It would seem some serious issue, just in case I would advise you to connect both XG to UPS to protect the device from being corrupted.

  • We have two UPS's which go into an Auto Transfer Switch which switches inputs if one fails so that the output has power even if one UPS fails.

A circuit breaker tripped last night and for some reason the Auto Transfer Switch failed also.

But none of that is relevant - the issue is that both Sophos 210's failed two boot until I power cycled them several times. Neither could find the boot device. Nothing was corrupted - after being power cycled a few times they booted just fine.

It's the failure to boot that I wanted to discuss - is there a known issue here? We've had a spectacular failure rate with the SG210's - everything from Dead On Arrival to memory corruption - but I've not seen this failure mode before.
