New Sophos Build

I am new to sophos, I am coming from a sonicwall tz600 and want to make sure I do not run into any compatibility issues with my build.  I have some general questions that will hopefully help me out, as I am buying hardware this week.

First off is XG recommended over UTM?

My internet is 240/12 also wanting to look into failover(is this possible with sophos?)

This is my build so far, anyone who can let me know what troubles I could run into would be fantastic!

CPU: Intel 7700K https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117726&cm_re=7700k-_-19-117-726-_-Product

Mobo: Mini-ITX https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157737

Case: Mini ITX case with PSU https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16811352059

Ram : 1x 16gb DDR4

HD: 120 M.2 2280

I know I need a PCI ethernet card, currently looking at: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4A04UB0103

Very open to any suggestions anyone has, and they would be much appreciated.

Last question is, does sophos let you upgrade your home license using your own hardware?

Thanks

  • Your equipment is way over specified for an XG home user.

    4 core

    6gb of ram

    minimum of 2 nics.

If you want serious security get a UTM, while it only has a 50IP limit you get the full functionality.

XG is still very much in development, v19 or v20 might get close to the current UTM level of security and features.

You can build your own unit using  business licence or you can build a home unit using a home licence regardless of XG or UTM.

You can upgrade your home UTM by purchasing a full business licence and applying it to your current configuration. I expect the XG to be similar.

  • I didn't know this and my sophos rep talked me into getting the XG, four months later I still haven't gotten it installed just right.  Professional Services hasn't seen a network like mine and I used up all 8 hours of Professional Services and still don't have it installed like originally planned.  I have set it back to default and built it backup multiple times now.  4 Layer 3 Routers behind a layer 2 network with the firewall doing the routing is not a fun thing to configure.  Maybe I should have gotten the UTM but I already purchased the XG back in January.

  • I am not sure using the XG as a router is good, more than likely a lot of hard work. Are we talking about work or home?

If home my understanding is the HA is not an option.

With your link you will need a fast cpu, a quad core i3 would suffice about 3.4ghz etc. I use e3-1245 or similar. The 1245 comes with an inbuilt display and is readily available in Australia. Using the inbuilt display reduces power consumption significantly my XG runs about 30-37w and needs tweaking. My utm running newer hardware runs around 25-30w.

  • I have the XG 310 with a failover unit for business use.  I think I got it figured out now,  I am creating another dmz zone and will put the router wan interfaces there and the people that manage those routers can access them from the lan.
