Remove Advanced shell access. XG should use only console commands like other Vendors

Hi Sophos,

many of us do like the Cli. Please make sure you remove the advanced shell as soon logging and all the commands can be executed from Console/GUI. Leaving the advanced shell open is unsafe and unprofessional.

Many of us come from Cisco School and we do like having CLI control.

I have even opened a feature request here:

http://ideas.sophos.com/forums/330219-sophos-xg-firewall/suggestions/10873362-cli-more-basic-commands-to-manage-xg

This will make Sophos to be more professional and safe. You can always integrate new feature on CLI and then on GUI. Having feature from CLI is much better to do not have them at all.

Regards

  • I absolutely do not agree with this claim. From my point of view, it will never happen that sophos has all the commands on CLI or GUI (There is something like experience which is saying this to me) If anyone goes down to Console,  then he should know what he does, and should be aware of the impacts that could happen when using any "dangerous" commands. So I don't see a problem having a shell. Anybody who doesn't feel safe to use it, should not do it.

  • Haha, I am no linux guru but using ubuntu gui has made all of us masters of linux[:$] Ever since the astaro days, I always liked the fact that the underlying linux system was not locked in any form. XG is actually more restrictive compared to UTM9. Forcing people to use CLI will force them to learn sophos commands and we don't need to learn new commands if we don't have to. Projects like vyatta were so successful because you could use linux commands and use juniper like cli if you wanted to.

To me more options is always a good thing and I think XG should make the linux shell more accessible and not the other way around.[:D]
