The firewall "crashes"

I´ve have a problem with my Sophos Firmware Version SFOS 16.05.2 MR-2.

Besides (Ram issues) my firewall stops working when it updates "Patterns" even that I´ve put the update to manual.

On the inside ... i loose connection to the internet.   The outside looses connection to services on the inside.

But the "box it self" is a live ... I login into the box and down to the console.

I can ping the inside and outside eth. ports and they answers.

SO .. i think the problem is in the firewall ruting it self, or the "Ram Issue".

How and what commands can I use to get out the information I need to check out this problem?

  • MR3 is out now for the 16.5.  You should update to it.  It is getting better but very slowly improving.  You have to enter the serial number to get the firmware -- the XG will tell you how if you try and update.  Generally, the XG is still very buggy (this is the cleanest word I can use).  If you dont want the bugs use the UTM 9.4 firmware.  I am really getting tired of the XG hanging and crashing but I am getting better with what not to do.  Added one SSID to the inbuilt Wireless and my 125W hangs.  Power button off and on.  The AP firmware version 8 is an improvemnt but it has not fixed this problem. after it powers back on -- it works.  Make any adjustments -- Power off/on.  I have reverted to UTM 9.4 on same device -- no issues.  Reloaded as XG -- crashes.

I have 35 UTMs running 9.4.  I have only three test devices running the XG.  That should tell you my opinion.  It still not ready for grown up pants.

  • Thank you for the reply Matthew!

I did a more drastic turn ;)  I switched back to SmoothWall for this  (new modern) ´box´.

Got hold of an older PC with i5 and 3 x 2gb memory

.... installed MR2 .... the restore dosen´t work properly .... restored the old firewall with backup from the (new modern) box ... crapped up the network cards. Why... dont know ... tried two times :-(

So i did a clean install, setup all the rules, dhcp, services again ;)

.... looking good, upgraded to MR3 been "Running for 1 day, 11 hours, 57 minutes"

Looking fine so far ... switched SmoothWall box with Sophos XG and now still looks good with good traffic. ( so far )

Hope it holds out! ;)  really liked the easy way to control the traffic in to the network and blocking countries.

Hope your problem will be solved to Matthew ... thanks again!
