XG Home Firewall - Single Ethernet

Hi,

I read several posts before downloading this, and I knew it required (2) ethernet ports, but that it also supported dot1q, so I thought I would evaluate it anyhow.

At home, I have a single ethernet port connecting to my switch, and trunk to it for everything.  I have my VDSL modem on a vlan, and all of my internal subnets on their own vlans, etc...

Well, when I boot this thing up now, it goes into failsafe mode due to the limited NICs.  Is there a way around this?  If not, does anyone know if I pop a NIC card into this thing temporarily to bypass failsafe, and then take it back out, will subsequent boots still go into failsafe mode?  I would permanently add one, but it is a specialized case for this board and has no physical space to allow me to keep one (or a cutout for a second one anyhow).

I would hate to have to spend a couple hundred bucks on a new board / case to evaluate this :)

TIA,

Greg

  • Greg,

XG requires at least 2 nic and you cannot use USB Ethernet cards because not supported yet.

    Regards

  • Yeah - I dug into the scripts and made it boot with one ethernet without failsafe - most services looked like they started based on the difference between failsafe and non-failsafe,  but the admin GUI did not start.  The LAN interface is not pingable from the network although the unit itself can ping out just fine - even with a firewall rule to allow it.

I'll just get another NIC for this old atom board I have to play with and leave it out of it's case until I decide if I like it.  I would keep digging further, but just do not have time to go through the entire boot process one by one..

Thanks for the info though.  If I like it, I will buy a new board/case to run it on.

  • Greetings!

Can you elaborate on how you modified the scripts? I am trying to set up with only 1 NIC and use vlan interfaces for each zone.

    Thanks,

    Daniel
