Web Filtering - Parts of Site

Hello, I have a question that has been tormenting me for a while, using XG Firewall

I have policies and rules that effectively block nudity, explicit, adult content etc etc.

Safe search is turned on and working effectively.

However, is there any way to increase this filtering effectively for even more control on "legitimate sites", but deeper in they get a bit more dirty.

For instance, trading site like ebay.com is ok, but any search for "naked girls" etc using the ebay site search will bring up some risque stuff.

Specific URL filtering does not work because there are just too many URL variables to take into account.

Question: How to block this sort of problem?

  • Aaron,

good question. I am sure you cannot do this because URL filtering works on categorization, so if a site is categorized as Nudity will be blocked otherwise not.

In the future (I hope) web filtering will analyze page contents (image, video, etc..), recognize the blocked contents and block it.

  • Thanks for the response.

Is there any way this could be included as part of the safe search component or what is contained in the url, because mostly it only happens when a user searches this sort of category?

For instance, any search string that contains anything relating to "objectionable". Basically block the contents of the search string if it contains "bad" stuff instead of the content.

A few years ago I used to use DansGuardian which could do this quite effectively by using a weighted list of "bad words". If the combined weight of these words exceeded a predefined limit, the page was blocked. Both the weighting of individual words and the limit could be tailored to suit which made it very granular.

Here is an example url for what i mean:

    Warning Link is NSFW

    www.ebay.com/.../i.html

  • Aaron,

  • Thanks, I took a look with the intent of creating a new feature request and found that someone else had already suggested this, so I gave them all the upvotes.....

  • Further to this issue, any of the category keywords such as the "NudityKeywords" Category effectively blocks keywords but not as a weighted phrase.

Which does in fact answer my original question because it blocks what is in the URL of my "Ebay" example. Weighted phrases would be better though....
