Offline Activation

Question

Good morning, 
 
 I'd like to evaluate XG in a virtual test environment, but apparently it needs a connection to the internet to activate - even during the trial period. Is anyone aware of any way XG can be tested in an offline virtual lab? Forexample, would the home edition suffice?

Hi Shaun, 
 The internet connection is needed to register the device on cloud and generate license for the Firewall module. It is mandatory for the initial setup.

 We have a plan to release an OS that would able to use the device without internet connection for first 30 days, This feature is taken in consideration for Partners to skip the registration process.

Ok, I finally managed to get my virtual copy of XG registered - for anyone who wants to do this, here are the steps I had to take... 
 
 1. Install XG in a VM with more than 2 network cards - In the VM, configure the second card so it's in bridged mode on it's own IP address. 
 2. Create a second VM with 2 network cards, with XP/WIN7 installed - this is the VM you will use to configure XG. 
 3. Setup XG so that it's LAN IP is in an IP range away from your actual network, and it's WAN network has an IP address on your actual network - this address should be allowed to NAT all traffic through any existing firewall if required. Also make sure the DNS settings are correct. 
 4. Setup Xp/Win7 so that one card is on the same network as the LAN network on XG (so it can access XG's web interface), and the other card is connected to your actual network. 
 5. Make sure the browser in the configuration machine can access BOTH the XG web interface and the Internet - make any required changes to the proxy setup in the browser settings to achieve this. 
 6. Once this is all done, you should be able to activate and register your XG installation. Once registered, you can reverse any NAT rules or changes you've had to make to your existing firewall to get the activation working. 
 
 This proves one thing - the documentation says that you need an Internet connection to register / activate XG firewall. thsi is not strictly true, as you actually need 2 connections - one for XG, and one for the configuration machine, because you need to be able to login to your myshopos account to register XG!
