VPN connection: Android (via OpenVPN) works, Windows client does get neither Gateway nor DNS IP address

Hi there,

I am using the VPN remote access to manage my network and servers.

While using my Android devices (smartphone or tablet connected to smartphone / hotspot) everthing is in place and I can reach everything (ssh, http, https, etc.),

but as soon as I am using my VPN tunnel on my notebook (Sophos SSL VPN client for Windows) I do not get IP addresses for the gateway and DNS.

Therefore I cannot reach any of my network devices :-/

Any idea how to solve this?

Thanks in advance :-)

  • Are you outside your network when you connect the VPN?

i.e. are you tethering your laptop to the android and then connecting to the VPN?

If you are connecting to the VPN on the same network as the UTM it will not work.

  • Hi Bohdan,

thanks for trying to help me :-)

My notebook and also my tablet are connected to the Android phone - Wifi range 192.168.43.x.

The VPN range (xxx.xxx.99.x) and my network (xxx.xxx.77.x) are completely different.

My tablet (over Android phone as hotspot) reaches all my network devices.

The notebook does get nether gateway nor dns ip address and cannot reach any network devices :-/

  • I modified my SSL VPN rule: added the VPN network IP address for the source and and the home network IP address for the destination...

Now it also works with my Windows notebook :-O

I still do not get it: Android devices worked even before!

    Seems solved :-P

    Thank you anyway :-)
