Unable to detect Primary Disk - NVMe SSD on Z170 chipset

I have attempted to install the Sophos XG v16 build on several different machines using a NVMe SSD in the m.2 slot all on Z170 chipsets and can't get it to see the drive. I can get it to see a regular SATA 840 Pro SSD just fine on the same board.

Has anyone had success getting Sophos XG Firewall to install to a NVMe m.2 SSD? I scoured the forums and multiple search engines and I can't find definitive proof of anyone having a problem or having success with using NVMe drives. This only leads me to believe that it should work? Is there no NVMe support currently?

Steps taken thus far:

Updated BIOS.

Tried with UEFI both disabled and enabled. The USB drive appears to be non UEFI so I have been unable to get it to boot with CSM disabled but I expected this.

I have tried every combination of disabling the sata controller / setting it to RAID mode, however this drive always shows as NVMe. I am able to successfully install windows 10 to this same NVMe drive and it boots fine.

TL;DR: Can anyone advise me on getting Sophos XG Firewall to detect a NVMe SSD during install?
