Snapchat messaging not working with iPhone

Hi,

Quite new to Sophos XG - running latest 16.01.2 and all seems OK save for one thing.

Snapchat messaging on my daughters iPhone doesn't work.

It works when using cellular data and it works when she attaches to other WiFi networks.

But not when she comes home and attaches to our WiFi which is behind the XG box.

There was a web and application policy on the rule blocking unwanted stuff but that has been removed. It's basically just a rule allowing anything from LAN -> WAN with the MASQ outbound NAT stuff set.

Malware scanning options are all unset.

Has anyone else come across this? What can I check?

  • Hi Iain,

Check #1 in my guide here. If you see any drop reason then you know which configuration part to mangle.

    Thanks

  • Hi, thanks for for the followup.

I ran the drop-packet utility against the IP address in question and it yielded nothing.

    No packets dropped.

  • Hi Iain,

Does you LAN to WAN firewall rule have Decrypt & Scan HTTPS checked? Snapchat will not work if that is the case. Open up the log viewer, go to the web filter portion, and filter by the source ip of the phone. At this point you can open up snapchat and try to view a few stories. You will see a list of URL's that Snapchat is trying to connect to. Look for any the are using https. Copy all of them down and add them in the HTTPS Decryption exception portion under the web module.

  • Hi... thanks --

Decrypt and Scan is NOT checked.

I added snapchat.com (per the web filter) to the exceptions and tried again ... and checked Decrypt and Scan... and tried again... still no joy.

Created a WiFi hotspot off my phone and attached the iPhone.. The queued messages went straight out.

  • I should add, Snapchat messaging works fine from my Samsung phone.

My sister has an Apple phone and will be visiting at the weekend.. Will be interesting to see if it fails on hers too.

  • Hi Iain,

My apologies. I see were you said it was not enabled in your first post now. Must have been too late for me last night :). Can you post a screenshot of your firewall rule? This is very strange behavior. I had the same issue on our public WiFi at the office and I was able to get it working on all platforms by doing the steps I posted earlier. Not sure why it's not working for you but I will try to help you the best I can.

  • Sure... I appreciate your help. Been working with firewalls for 20+ years (Checkpoint, Stonegate, PIX etc)... but Sophos is new to me.
