Why does the XG 16.0.x see sr.symcd.com a bad wheres the UTM does not

Hi folks,

being a bit bored at the moment, I started to explore some of the continual bad sites reported by the XG. One site sr.symcd.com is considered objectionable?

The UTM does not report this site or any of the other sub-domains associated with it.

Thoughts please?

  • On my XG, this site falls under "Freeware and Shareware".  The XG lists it as "Objectionable".  Given that the XG is geared towards corporate clients, I can see the perspective from corporate IT not wanting users to install freeware or shareware that:
    a) could contain malware or other bad things, and
    b) could interfere with other software or systems on the network.

While I'm not from the IT world, I can see why their lives would be simpler if the only software installed on the computers was software sanctioned by the IT department.  Having troubleshot a number of issues on friend's home computers, freeware or shareware issues can be a tremendous pain.

    My 2 cents...

  • Software sanctioned by IT departments does not work because there are too many addons for some of the software that keep changing, while you can limit the core sites you can't always limit the sub sites accurately. Requires a full time team to evaluate all the urls that are accessed. I work in IT support for users and networks.

If you investigate what the site does you will find that it is possibly required by a lot of security checking software even though it is a free software site. I don't believe the site would be allowed to be used for malware etc because that would ruin Symantec's reputation as a security software provider.

  • Hi,

XG uses it's own database for categorization of Web Sites. Alongside, UTM works in conjunction with McAfee for the same purpose. I think that sums it all.

    Thanks
