Multi Wan QoS

Old pfSense user now using XG16 for home use (and loving it) and I was wondering how QoS works with Multi Wan. I have 2 x 10mb ADSL lines, do I add the line speed totals together, subtract 10% and put them in System Services > Traffic Shaping Settings?

Also what happens to QoS if 1 line goes down?

Can you do QoS per Wan interface (I had a look but couldn't see where this can be done, pfSense allows for QoS per Wan interface)?

Thanks :)

  • Hi JasonOxley,

Thank you for choosing Sophos  , Seems you have some confusion on load balancing and QOS policy . Allow me to clarify some things for you .

If you have 2 ADSL lines of 10mbps each , this does not mean that  you would get 20mbps  . the traffic is based on sessions and while using load balancing the session is load balanced and so the maximum traffic per session is 10mbps . Eg if you are downloading the file , you would create a session and would go through one of the ISP at a time, you would not exceed the maximum capability of your connection. On similar note, if you download another file and this session is gone through another ISP then you would attain the same . So if you are using in Active - Active mode then you would use both ISP connection and would get aggregated speed.

If they have same weight and bandwidth then they would share the load to 50% approx, if one of the isp connection is down then one of your active connection would take 100% load . While considering the QOS , QOS would limit the bandwidth consumption based on service , user , application or web Surfing and also can manage priority based on your work environment .

You may edit the QOS in Traffic Shapping Setting if you need to share your bandwidth with another device , eg if you have 10 + 10 line and want to use only 12 in total then you would add value 12mbps -10% value /

If you wish to utilize full then you may need to increase to maximum value.
