New to Sophos - XG or SG?

New to Sophos and need a firewall for a small business that has pretty simple network usage (web browsing & email and Exchange is hosted in cloud - no VPN or anything like that needed).

I know SG is the more "mature" product and XG is the new product.  While I'd like to avoid upgrading to XG later, I'm concerned about bugs/stability in XG.  Is it solid enough now to go with it without hesitation?

  • Hello Jeff,

Good one. I would suggest you try the XG home and play with it for a while before you take a decision.

In my opinion, XG would be the one that will suffice all the security needs you have mentioned above.

If you could please elaborate your concerns about XG, we could have a deeper discussion.

    Regards,

  • My concern is BUGS.  SG has been developed much longer than XG, but I suppose XG is now one year old so wondering if it is now as stable as SG?

  • Jeff,

every SW has bugs. The difficulty on XG at the moment is to retrieve bug list in one place. On UTM9, on Sophos website you can find a know issue list while on XG is still very confusing but Sophos Staff is improving this aspect.

I am using XG from the beginning (v15 beta) and it is stable. As wrote, you have to test it at home or in a small environment. My XG never rebooted suddenly.

The right question is: if the features built-in are enough to fit your needs. Some features are still missing compared to XG.

Test it at least for 30 days and then decide.

I did not find so many bugs (only during beta).

    Regards
