DNS Hostname Issue

So, I have an XG125 that has small network of machines on the LAN port, all fine there.

I am currently attempting to set up an Active Directory server on a spare box, which I think I have set up fine, the box has it's own static IP provided via the XG (192.168.0.40) and I have given it the name something.local

In the XG I have added this box to the list of static DNS providers

I have also added in a DNS Host Entry and a DNS Request Route for something.local

Now when I do a Test Name Lookup in the XG all seems to work fine

However when I attempt to ping/nslookup something.local from any machine on the network it simply doesn't work.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

  • AD clients should have their DNS pointing to the AD server.

Now, a DNS request for server.internal.local goes to Sophos, which in turn tries its 1st DNS server 8.8.8.8.
This server will reply "name not found"  and because query is answered fine, Sophos won't try 2nd or 3rd DNS configured
