Question about hardware choise for the home edition

Hi.

At the moment i`m using an old TP-Link TL-WR1043N/ND v1 router with openwrt.

Now i would like to change to Sophos XG Firewall Home Edition on my own hardware.
Before i want to buy it i have a few questions...

I have already an old Mini-ITX pc which i would like to change. It is an D945GSEJT on which linux is running for my home automatic system fhem.

My plan is now to buy a new Mini-ITX Gigabyte GA-N3150N-D3V mainboard with 4GB ram and a 160GB SSD. I will use my old case and power supply.
I would like to install VMware vSphere Hypervisor on it with three network adapters. The two from the mainboard and one virtual. Next step will be to install sophos as one system with 3 CPU`s and 3 or 3,5GB Ram. Second i will install a linux system for fhem on it with 1 CPU and min 512MB Ram and connected on the virtual adapter. This machine will stay later in a dmz.
What i still missing is my wlan. Here i`m not so sure how to do. I think i can use my old router, connect it to the LAN, and use it like a bridge only for WiFi? Someone have experience with it?

What do you think about my mainboard choise? Will it work like my plan?
About performance it is important for me, that it can handle my 100Mbit wan and maybe in the feature 200Mbit. I have only maximum 2 computers and around 2-4 phones connected. Do you think the CPU and ram is enough for it?

  • Sascha,

the mini-itx with only 4 GB is not even enough for XG to handle the 100 Mb (200 Mb in the future). You should use a system with 6 GB of RAM and 4 Core (home license limitation) and use the system only for XG, otherwise you will get poor performance (if you use most of the Filters, Web, Application, IPS).

Use another box for Vmware/Linux machine.

The external AP can only be used as bridge and managed separately. If you want to use Wireless Features available with XG, you have to use a Sophos AP.

    Hope this helps!
