XG firewall home edition slows bandwidth down Big Time!

First off, I'm rather new to firewalls but have some basic knowledge. I just installed XG firewall home edition version 16.01. So far all seems to be good, but my internet speed was approx. 200 megs down and after the install I'm lucky to top out at 40 megs. I, running the firewall in a Dell R210 server, I3 processor running at 3.0ghz, 8 gigs of RAM. I believe both onboard nics are Broadcom and are both gigabit. I have bare minimum filters applied, only blocking explicit content. I believe IPS is not on. I had a Meraki MX64 firewall installed just before I deployed this one and had no issues then. Can anyone give me some possibilities on what might be the issue.

Thanks

  • Do you have all the filters and scanning options enabled on your LAN traffic? If so, try to turn them off. Check your internet speed and from that point start building up your security.

  • Hi,

Check #4 in my troubleshooting guide here.

    Any luck with that?

  • Hey Jeffrey,

Thanks for the response. I will look into those possibilities and post back.

    Thanks,

  • Sorry for the delay from my last post but I've been busy. Well I'm pretty much at my wits end. I'm still having a bandwidth issue. I've gone over the items that Jeffrey advised and to no resolution. Let me try to explain in detail. First the XG software is running on a Dell R210 server with a I3 processor with 8gigs of ram. HDD is a SSD. No VMware of any kind. I've reloaded the software just in case something went wrong with the install. All filters are off and no scanning of any sort that I can see that me be engaged. No firewall rules other that letting everything pass. QOS is not limiting anything. My download speed is 230 megs with no XG. With XG I top out at 32megs. Completely unacceptable as I'm sure anyone would agree. I have a Meraki MX64 that I'm testing and with content filtering, Malware scanning, advanced threat protecting and other various filters running I'm pulling 200-210 megs down. I really like the Sophos XG interface and what it offers for the feature set, but clearly something is wrong. Is it the hardware that I'm running or does it pull down that much. My Dell packs a lot more punch than the MX64. Is there someone else having this issue and could possibly give me some in site to what may be wrong.

    Thanks

  • Hi Toby ,

We would like to conduct a Simple Test , You may load onto  the VM and Simulate the same environment . Try on that PC or anther  .. This should give you an idea of what the problem might be.

  • Check Flood control; if you are use to working SG series behavior and you turned on TCP flood control; then a standard internet speed test is going to give you about 10-30mbps throughput before it starts discarding packets thus creating the ceiling.    You can check for massive dropped packets on the:  PROTECT> Intrusion Prevention > Dos Attacks
