Migrate AP55c from UTM9 to XG

Hi

I have a pair of AP55c AP's that I'm evaluating and would like to try them under XG.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that once the AP55 is updated with the XG firmware, they can't be used on UTM9 again.

I can't find the post again - was I imagining it?

Is there a general consensus on the Sophos AP's? We normally use Ubiquiti AP and UTM9 F/W but it would be nice to have a single controller managing both F/W and AP's.

The main downside I've seen so far though is that the Sophos APs go offline when the F/W is unavailable. Don't understand why this would happen if they were configured as bridge to LAN...

Thanks!

  • Darren,

I tested AP10, AP55 on XG and then moved back to UTM without issue. I did not test the AP55c but access point should be intelligent to download the right firmware (UTM or XG) without any issue.

AP are controlled by XG/UTM using a special ping mechanism, so if the controller goes down, the AP does not work anymore.

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks

  • Thanks for the clarification Luk - I must have been having a senior moment :)

The downside we have identified for the Sophos APs is that if a remote office with Sophos APs is connected to head-office UTM via VPN and everything routes through the VPN, when connectivity is lost, the APs go offline and the remote offices cannot even access their local devices (e.g. printers / local NAS) via WiFi.

  • Darren,

yours point of view is a nice idea. They can improve this aspect by allowing the Admins to decide what to do if the AP does not reach the XG. Also I would like to have the possibility to configure static IP for AP (this is another idea).

Open a feature request on http://ideas.sophos.com/forums/330219-sophos-xg-firewall and I will give a vote for having "always on" feature on Sophos AP.

    Thanks
