hardware appliance performance compair to software install on regular server?

all you really need is processor speed and at least two cores.

The XG210 and a Dell R230 are comparing apples to oranges. The XG210 is made by a company called Caswell. That box is only running a Celeron G1820 which is a 2 core/ 2 thread CPU at 2.7 GHz.

The R230 processor you are referencing will be much faster as it is 4 core at 3 GHz. Note you must have a software license that will support 4 cores and 8 GB of ram to take advantage of the hardware.

FYI the home license only supports 4 core and up 6 GB of ram but with that size box, I can't imagine you would be running on a home licence.

I would suggest you get with a Sophos partner to properly size your environment. A software license to support the Dell server will be significantly more than the XG210.

I can't see why you would not run the XG on a home licence with that box.

Currently running 8gb with a i3 6100 3.7ghz cpu. Only 2 core.

Looking at going back to the e3 1245 v2 running at 3.1ghz at least I get 4 real cores.

Not saying you couldn't, but that is an expensive appliance or server in this scenario to serve up a few users in a house. The XG210 can easily support 50 users with everything turned on. Why would you need that at home?

Did you end up installing Sophos XG on a dell R230?  Just wondering if you ran into any boot problems or other unforeseen issues.

No i use R230 here just because i throught XG210 has e3 1220V5 found in R230.

I have a R420 at home and it runs fine. But i don't use onboard NIC and have a intel i350 instead.

With 2 X5570 I have and 32gb of RAM(6 given to XG), it can outperform anything. Overkill I know, but power consumption is not bad at all. You can load a nas and bits and pieces you need and voila! Just have to find the space for that beast!

With the price drops on refurbished servers, it's affordable even for a home. Space and sound is on the downside though.

Currently what you plan to do with the box will determine your processing power.

If you build, configure and do not experiment with tweaking features then a J1900 with 6gb, 60gb SSD and 2 or 4 intel NICs will be sufficient. If you are like me and always fiddling and experimenting then you need hardware that will update the GUI in a reasonable time. The current GUI is very slow and is expected to be replaced with a faster leaner version when v18 is released.
