Polycom and Grandstream Phones will not provision over HTTP or HTTPS

Polycom and Grandstream Phones will not provision over HTTP or HTTPS, even with all inspection rules disabled.

We are having a severe issue with several customers of ours with XG routers. Essentially, we cannot get any of our phones to provision over HTTP or HTTPS. We use 3CX in a cloud platform that pulls a config from a URL based on the MAC address. While looking through the logs on the Polycom and Grandstream, we see them both basically reporting that the file cannot be found on the server.

However, when we take the devices to our office (which has a Sophos UTM), everything provisions just fine.

If we can't get this fixed we cannot purchase XG firewalls in the future.

  • We also use 3cx (just upgraded to v15), but on premise, but also have a remote office provisioning via the SBC method over the internet without issue.  For me it was a matter of understanding how to correctly setup static NAT mapping and port forwarding, after I fixed that all was well.
