XG Home 1 month in: suggestions to improve setup?

So I've setup my Sophos XG (home license) and have spent a lot of time reading these boards sorting out various issues, thank you all for asking such good questions! I'll briefly explain my setup and then point out a few key areas I want to improve. Before we begin, bear in mind, this is my first FW setup of any kind- please forgive any incorrect terminology, but PLEASE correct me. I used an decent desktop with 3 NICs for this project. Going forth, "XG" will refer to this setup.

Setup:

Cable modem to port 2 (WAN) of XG.

XG port 1 (LAN) to WAN of Linksys router. 3 of 4 ports on router are in use to various devices.

Recently added 3rd NIC to XG, currently to a 4 port unmanaged switch with no connections as of yet.

With my current setup, 172.16.16.17 is my Linksys router, and all traffic from router is logged in XG with same IP. I'd like to be able to determine which IP traffic flows. It sounds like what I need to do, is make my XG my AP, and not my Linksys router. Is it possible to for my XG to act as my DHCP server while my Linksys router is the AP?

I've run into minimal issues other than that thus far; aside from Netflix. But I believe that was timed with the release of the latest firmware. Thanks, all!

  • Hi and welcome,

you can do what you have requested.

1/. enable dhcp on the XG a range above your manually assigned addresses.

2/. disable DHCP in the linksys router.

3/. disable the firewall in the linksys and only use the switch ports.

That is all there really is to it.
