Possible bug in web filter

So I have had Sophos XG as my main firewall at home for a few weeks now, but the past few day's I have been having non stop issues with forms on websites.

I.E login forms, comment forms, and more importantly some forms on a CMS I use which has a 100% chance of crashing.

By crashing I mean I get a blank page in Firefox, Safari says the was a 502 Gateway Error and Opera/Chrome says the website could not handle the request.

In most of them instances pressing refresh and clicking resend will actually allow it to go through.

Sometimes it does it sometimes it doesn't, seems to depend on the website.

Before disabling the web filter on the policy would solve it, but now even that is not working.

Because it's a 502 gateway error I assume it's an issue with the Sophos Box, when I bypass it by using a different router it works with no issues, so differently sounds like a Sophos issue, but it has only started happening past week, so possibly a rouge update has occurred??? just trying to think what would make it stop working seemingly overnight.

Any ideas what is causing this.

  • Murphy's Law, every time I do a forum post about some issue I am having I find the solution like 5 minutes later.

I can confirm this is a bug, the issue is with the web proxy in Sophos XG.

The fix is to console into the firewall and run the following command

    set http_proxy relay_invalid_http_traffic on

That will basically tell the firewall to just forward the traffic it can't recognize anyway, obviously this should have to be done, it seems to be marking genuine requests as invalid ones, but considering I am not in an enterprise environment I can live with the "invalid" traffic until it's fixed.

Just googling Sophos XG 502 comes up with a bunch of other forum posts about this dating back to February

Going to post this anyway in case others are facing the 502 Gateway error with their Sophos Box
