Installing the Sophos XG using ESXi

Hello everyone,

I have noticed a few people have had issues connecting to the internet and actually getting set up using the XG with ESXi. I have put a post together which should hopefully assist you in getting set up using ESXi, I hope this helps. Any questions just ask and I will try answer them to the best of my ability. The instructions I have provided are based off works for a recent home network I set up.

So why exactly would I want to use Workstation running on ESXi? What benefit do you have to running this inside of Workstation? I haven't done extensive testing but I've found that there is a performance hit when running things inside a hypervisor let alone on workstation.

For me, this was part of a lab deployment - but I guess others may have other reasons for using this guide.

Fair enough, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't using a benefit. I'm about to install this on ESXi 6.5u1 so no VSphere. Unfortunately, I need to wait for an additional SSD since the current S3500 is only 80GB and I just noticed that XG needs an additional 80GB for reports.

Hello, I'm trying to follow your guide and I'm a little lost. I'm using ESXi 6.5. Are these the same steps for this version?

Hi Mike,

At the time of writing this article, I was using ESXi version 5.0.0.

I'm trying to do the same myself, running ESXi 6.5 too and I can't get my damn modem connection to be detected by the Firewall in any of the physical ports on my system. Driving me insane.

I ended up installing it on a low profile PC. However, I will probably move to something else since I have more than 50 clients wanting internet access.
