Ethernet ports configured for LAN only come up at 10/full...

If I leave it this way my internet never goes above about ~9 meg, but is sometimes no faster than 2-3.  If I hard set it to 100/Full to match my switchports (Cisco Catalyst 3560) sometimes I'll get my max bandwidth (20), other times it degrades all the way down to like 2-3.  Anyone have this type of issue or know what might be causing it? I've tried an alternate NIC/port to no avail.

  • Josh,

What is your port configuration on Cisco? Auto or 100 full duplex?

Also how are you testing your Internet speed?

How many rules do you have? IPS on these rules is enabled? What hw are you using for your XG?

    Thanks.

  • Hey Luk,

Thanks for the response.  The Cisco is configured for auto/auto.  It should be noted that I also previously had a Linksys unmanaged switch that exhibited this same behavior on the LAN interface on the xg

Internet speed tests are via speedtest.net as well as ones provided by my ISP.  I expect there to be some fluctuation when using speedtest.net, but the results are similar on the ones hosted by my ISP.  My ISP has also checked everything over multiple times (I am employed by my ISP as well just for reference).

Currently I just have a default rule that was created during setup to allow all from LAN to WAN, and then I have a port forwarding rule setup to allow my Plex server to be accessed remotely (though it isn't shared with anyone).  IPS is turned on.  I wanted to get things working properly before I spent the time to create more rules and lock stuff down a bit more.

My main hardware is an Asus E35M1-M PRO Fusion AMD E-350 APU (Dual Core; 8GB ram installed).  Installation is on an SSD.  All of my NIC's are based on a Realtek chipset.  Is there some compatibility issues with certain chipsets? I couldn't find anything when I was searching before posting this question.

    Thanks again,

    Josh

  • Don't know for sure but the Realtek NIC's could be your problem, They are the worst of the pack for this. Intel 1st, Broadcom 2nd no Realtek. I would try and test Intel NIC's.

I am by know means an expert on Sophos but this is what I have found over the years using different packages.

  • As Bigray said,

try with a Intel or Broadcom cards (intel is better) and let us know. You can try with a  PCI-E Dual port NIC card.

  • Hey Luk & Ray,

Thanks for the suggestion on trying an Intel Card.  I don't have any BCM cards. I tried an old Intel 10/100 card and it does seem to auto negotiate at 100/full.. performance is mixed since I only have the one card to try. Since this shows promise I have ordered a couple new Intel chipset based cards and will see what happens.. Heres to hoping for good things!

    Thanks!

    Josh

  • Sounds promising, Glad I could help.
