Unable to Categorize

Content Filter has been unable to categorize my web traffic.  When I do a test URL lookup, the category is Uncategorized and the description is now "Unable to Categorize". Restart has not solved the problem

Anyone know how to fix it and show me the categories of websites?

  • I am having the URL "Unable to categorize" problem on a  XG310 SFOS 17.5.3 and also on SFOS 17.5.6 Firewall.

This is a knewn Bug by Sophos because the internal Web Filter Proxy using Port 8080 can not us a forward Proxy with Port 80.

So for us its not possible to use Web Protection beacause of Unable to categorize.

It is a useless feature if you are have to use a forward proxy.

  • It is unusual (AFAIK) to use port 80 as a Web proxy port, because port 80 is commonly used as an HTTP port.

Web Proxy port uses a variation on the HTTP syntax, and also support HTTPS on the same port.  But it is not the same thing.

If you are trying to use another product that does transparent proxy on 80/443 upstream from the XG, you need to configure your network so the packets flow that way.

I've not tested trying to use an upstream proxy on port 80.  In theory it should work but I would not be too surprised if it didn't.

  • Until SFOS 17.5.3 it was possible to use an upstream Proxy with Port 80

with MR6 and also MR7 its not possible anymore. Cotegoryzing never worked for us.

but we are adviced to use the Upstream Proxy with port 80, its not our ressort

and its not possible to change, so all city authority have to use this port.

So for us the Sophos XG310 is useless and not possible to use since Update MR6 and MR7.
