Can one install XG Firewall Home Edition on an XG appliance, e.g. XG 125W?

My understanding is that UTM Home Edition can be installed on SG appliances, does the same hold true for XG Firewall Home Edition on XG appliances?

I was about to purchase an XG 125W for home use, and thought I better check this first!

One additional question, if I buy an XG 125W applicance, could I still install UTM Home Edition if I am not happy with XG Firewall?

Thanks,

Chris.

  • Has there been any answers for this? I am ready to make a purchase of some hardware but don't want to be tied down to a yearly renewal at this time.
  • This was discussed on the forum, the home license will not install on an official hardware appliance. You have to build one for yourself. Unfortunately nobody have found out a way to support internal wifi hardware yet, so you will need to buy an access point from Sophos if you want managed WiFi or any other access point if not.

There were some voices that you can install software version on Sophos hardware - but you will loose wifi support and other hardware related features.
  • You comment is not 100% accurate;  You can install XG Firewall Home on a UTM 220, etc as long as you replace the Hard drive.  Sophos uses a special firmware on the hard drives that allows them to detect "their hardware", remove the drive and replace with any sata (or in some cases SAS) drive and the license will be granted.  While at it, replace the super noisy fans they put in these things...omg it is like they are trying to punish people...lol.

  • Well, as XG hardware is customized PC hardware, you can hack it to run non-supported firmware, but "The Home Edition" is not a device but a license and in this context hardware appliances are said incompatible.

You will also lose WiFi feature from "W" appliance if you do so.

This is why I think my comment was correct.
