Sophos XGS 136 (v19) - SSL VPN client

Hi,

I currently have a Sophos XGS 136 running SFOS 19.0.1

There is also an SSL VPN service that is running. Users are able to connect with either Open VPN (2.4.9) or Sophos Connect 2.2.75 without any issues.

However one of the users upgraded to Open VPN 3.3.6. Even though a connection is established, it seems the client doesn't detect the DNS settings. As a result the VPN connection is no longer useful. Reverting back to OpenVPN 2.4.9 works fine !

I contacted Sophos (official) support after supplying logs files and diagnotics. Initially level 1 support told me that Open VPN 3.x is supported but from what I can see it's not. After some to-ing and fro-ing they agree that there is indeed an issue (and has been escalated to their GES team).

Does anyone know if OpenVPN 3 is supported ?  If not what is the latest version of 2.x that is supported ?

For most Windows users, using the Sophos Connect client works fine. However there are also MacOSX and Linux users where the Sophos Connect client is not an option.

Cheers,

  • Hello  ,

Thank you for reaching out to the community, currently OpenVPN 2.5.6 is supported and this implementation was completed with the release of Sophos Connect 2.2. Now the connection implementation for OpenVPN3 is still under investigation/development which again mostly likely to be completed with the release of Sophos Connect 3.0.

    Thanks & Regards,

  • Hi Vivek,

That's the best reply I've had so far.

After to-ing and fro-ing with official Sophos support (Level 1) with various tests and detailed diagnostics, I couldn't get a clear answer other than v3 is not supported yet.

    - Does this mean I should only use OpenVPN clients that don't exceed what is currently installed on the Sophos XGS 136 ?   E.g. if the server is running a Sophos version OpenVPN 2.5.6 server then the client version should be no greater than 2.5.6, correct ?

Most of our clients are Windows based, but there are a few Linux and MacOSX users who are not able to use the Sophos Connect client. From what I can tell there are no Sophos Connect clients that are avalilable to Linux and MacOSX other than using the opensource version of VPN and Tunnelblick.

    Thanks,

  • Yes,   you understood it correctly.

    Thanks & Regards,
