Sophos XG HOME Hardware - How to do a stresstest?

Hello there, this might no the typical hardware seizing question, but I would liek more to see how I can stress my hardware to see if it is capable. From what I read IPS needs to be activated, and TLS intercept. What else?

Background:

I am currently running my Sophos Home on a Hyper V VM on an Intel NUC i3 1115G4. I have the opportunity to switch to a dedicated device with a Pentium J5005 which is roughly half as fast. My intenret lien ist 250/40, but will potentially go to 1 Gbit in two years (fiber). Do you think the J5005 would be fast enough for the full package?

Many thanks in advance

  • Hello!

It will depend on what features you're going to use. But the J5005 should be able to handle 1 Gbit/s on general internet traffic.

Anyway, don't expect line-rate gigabit with TLS Decryption, or 1 Gbit/s with a single connection with IPS, the J5005 isn't fast enough for that.

Enable all features you're going to use, I recommend enable ATP with the "Inspect untrusted content", use a "LAN TO WAN" IPS Policy, "Allow All" as the Application Filter and create your own Web Policy and use it. (Don't forget to enable HTTP/S AV Scan and Zero-day Protection.)

Only create a TLS Decryption Rule if you're actually going to use it, I recommend you to do some stress test first without TLS Decryption - since you will have a expected 50% speed reduction after enable decryption.
