bandwidth confusing report

Hi

Can anyone help with the system graph wan zone Total upload/download data transfer report. The index uses KBits/s which leads me to believe this report is a bandwidth usage report. However, if I run a weekly report I get a Max download of 15,393 KBits/s if I run a monthly report I get a Max download of 7,196 KBits/s, how can a monthly Max be less than a weekly Max, a Max is a Max? I am trying to diagnose consistent internet bandwidth congestion at the same time each day and XG reports are not helping.

  • Hi,

lit is only a report on traffic through the XG, not on traffic used by the XG.  What is your link speed, check whether XG updates are occurring at the same time as your congestion issue.

  • Our connection speed it 100Mbs/s down and 40Mbs/s up.

I am not quite sure what you mean by "lit is only a report on traffic through the XG, not on traffic used by the XG" is it not the peak bandwidth at any given point in time? I would have though the report should reflect the same for each day not change, if the peak bandwidth in the weekly report was say 13,000 on the Friday should this not be the same for the monthly report of that day, I can understand the average changing. If you look at the monthly report the18th was Friday in the weekly report, should not the max for the month be at least the max for the week given they are in the same time period? But on the monthly report the 18th the download never gets above 4000 where on the weekly report the download is well above 10000 KBits/s, this seem strange to me.

I also find it strange as the CPU load on Friday when the download peak was around 13000 was 99% (CPU is normally less than 25%), and the connections (web activity) was around 4000 sessions which is pretty normal for that time yet our bandwidth seemed to be saturated according to all users, according to the ISP there were no bandwidth issues their end in that time period. The only thing I can put it down to is that for some reason the CPU load was not up due to bandwidth saturation but for another reason and this was causing the bandwidth issue. But that aside, if the reports are not consistent how can I be confident that the reports are actually reporting the true bandwidth.

I am trying to look at other metrics that might explain the CPU load at the same time, like TLS/SSL inspection.

  • Hi,

I am not arguing with you about the issue, the issue has annoyed me since I started using XG. My investigations show that the report is over 48 hours even though the graph shows 24. The same peak will show on two consecutive days, not that you would notice with your usage.

The graphs do not include the firmware and pattern updates that are downloaded to the XG for use by the XG.

Which hardware and software versions are you using?

  • Hi

    I am on software version 19.01 MR1

Hardware: XG115w I think it is version 3 but could be 2 never sure where to find it other than looking at the box and it is a pain to go and look at.

I wish the reporting was a little better on XG, have been think of changing devices just to get better insight into what is actually going on in the network and who is doing what.
