Why SSLVPN reduced the upload and download bandwidth to almost half?

Hi Sophos Community team,

Good day! Can we ask for any insights on our current SSLVPN bandwidth results, below is an image we have gathered during our testing so far. We have tested 5 different Internet Providers and whenever we connect to SSLVPN via OpenVPN or Viscosity Apps, the bandwidth is almost half.

Is there any way we can adjust this on our Sophos Firewall XG or is this how it is supposed to be when connected to SSLVPN?

We appreciate anyone's thoughts/tips on this. Thank you in advance!

  • This is remote access VPN (not site-to-site), correct? And the ISPs are where you're VPN'ing in from (Verizon, AT&T, etc)? And you're using OpenVPN Client at the remote end?

You actually got a 3x improvement in download speed on Provider4 by using the VPN? The numbers seem all over the place.

  • Hi Wayne,

    Thanks for your response.

Yes - a remote access VPN. And the ISPs are home internet providers and either used OpenVPN Client and Viscosity at the remote end.

Though Provider4 is actually the same internet provider where the Sophos Firewall XG is hosted but just on a different public IP that's why it seems to have good and close enough bandwidth while on VPN.

But we also want to understand, why the bandwidth while connecting in remote access VPN is reduced to almost half vs. without VPN. Anything we need to further check on our XG Firewall?

    Thank you!
