Sohos XG Home Ed - License Question

Hello,

I downloaded and got XG `9.x up and running on a virtual machine with the supplied license, no issues with that.

However, since this is a home setup and my VM hosting server is pretty old and janky, I sometimes have hardware problems and down time. When this happens, I have no internet access for researching problems, buying parts, etc., and the kids doing online classes creates a lot of grief for me as well.  So what I wanted to do was install the XG Home edition using the same license on a small PC that I have, something that I can power on and use in the event the virtual machine version is offline when my junky equipment fails me. I prefer to run this as a VM to keep the heat down as well as power consumption in the house to a minimum.

First, is this scenario allowed for under the licensing for the home edition if only one will ever be online at any given time? Secondly, if so, should I activate it with the same key I was supplied with originally when I built the virtual machine?

I haven't installed XG on the physical PC yet, I wanted to wait until I got the licensing questions sorted out first. Any answers would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

  • In the end, you are installing a OS. You can use the ISO installer (Software) with GRUB. Or you can use a software virtual machine installer.

From my perspective, i would recommend to use a hypervisor, if possible. From experience, the hypervisor has a broader hardware support.

You should not reuse the serialnumber. Instead generate a new one. There is no limit in amount of home licenses you can generate.

  • Thank you very much, this is exactly the answer I was looking for. I just wasn't sure if I could use the same key again, or if a second one was allowed for home use since it is free.

    Thanks again!
