Sophos XG Home realistic throughput question

Ok-- so just looking for some feedback as to what kind of throughput i should be getting.

I have an older HP small form factor pc that has an Intel Core i5 (3rd Gen) 3470 / 3.2 GHz quad core cpu.

More than 8GB of RAM ( I know it only uses 6GB)

256GB SSD.

Intel nic's.

I have Gig internet with Spectrum-- specifically 940 down by 40 up.

With a standard Unifi USG with nothing turned on (no IDS/IPS) i typically get the full 900mb via speedtest.net-- but consistently over 800-- which is similar to speed tests plugged directly into the cable modem.

With this computer and Sophos XG Home (v18) installed-- i'm doing good to get 750 to 800 with pretty much everything turned off. If i add IPS, Web filtering, and Advanced Threat features then it's more ranging in the 550 to 650mb range.

Am i missing something here? My thoughts were that this computer with it's quad cpu would be fairly comparable to an XG 135 appliance-- but i'm just not getting that throughput.

CPU seems to be averaging less than 10% usage and memory doesn't seem to go over around 30%-- so just looking for some feedback.

  • Hi,

you should get almost line speed with that cpu. Do you have any settings enabled in the ips gui tag, if so, please disable. Also try disabling the speed step in bios, the cpu needs to be almost flat out to achieve high throughput unless using multiple devices to pull traffic.
