Establishing an OpenVPN tunnel from a system on the LAN to a server on WAN

Greetings,

an industrial Helmholtz router on the LAN is trying to establish an OpenVPN tunnel to a central server on the Internet,  to no avail. A Helmholtz connection test program is telling us that a connection to the central server can be accomplished, but a tunnel cannot be established. Since the Sophos XG also uses OpenVPN for home office users, I was wondering whether this might actually the problem?

Many thanks in advance,

Stephan

  • Hello Stefan,

the open VPN function on the firewall (regardless of whether it is SG or XG/firewall) should not interfere with a client's VPN tunnel.
Rather, it is the port used which may be disturbed by web filters or SSL interception.
First, i would check the firewall log to identify used protocol (TCP/UDP) and port.
If you own a Sophos Firewall (XG/XGS) we should move the question to the corresponding forum. (here we are at the SG/UTM forum)

  • Thanks! I'll investigate the logs to see if the packets were blocked. I'll try moving my question.
