  • Hi,

are you planning to use an internal 5G modem or a seperate modem connected via usb? You will need to check 5G modem hardware comparability.

  • I prefer internal 5G modem and 4 gigabit lan ports. 5G modem hardware comparability is not clear. Where can find such list of supported 5G modems?

  • Hi,

I can't help you there and would recommend for compatibility to use an external modem with an ethernet interface to overcome USB driver issues. Also an external modem allows you to place it in the best signal strength location which is not always the best place for the XG hardware and connections.

  • As Ian said, to avoid issues with USB devices - get an external modem / router and set it to bridge mode.
I bought an used Sophos appliance (in my case it was a SG 210) and run Sophos XG Home on it (with modem in brigde mode). Maybe get a smaller form factor appliance?
In case of a Sophos appliance you have first to wipe the whole disk and use the software installer afterwards to install the home edition.

  • Whatever solution you end up with, could you please post the final outcome? I've been all over this forum and a handful of others and still can't figure out if it's even possible to run XG at 1Gbps throughput on a fanless mini pc. Everything I've seen points to server grade hardware or an old Sophos appliance (which are not fanless nor mini). Good luck!

  • So deccision is hard and i also cannot find enoght info what hardware is sypported by XG Firewall.

It seem some intel cards are unsuported i219 and i225.

minipce 5g modems also ara not clear. In genral 5G Cellular is no whidely used. 4G LTE is up to 300Mbtis and i do not want to invest there.

My setup is Hyper-VM with Sophos XG 4 cores and 6GB RAM and it is working since years but i want to move it to dedicated mini PC which is not big issue.

I want to avoid buing expensive 5g router like MikroTik Chateau 5G ax (S53UG+M-5HaxD2HaxD-TC&RG502Q-EA) to use it only as bridge to Sophos XG

This means 400 EUR for mini PC and 600 EUR for Mikrotik.

It will be better if i can setup mini PC with 5G sim, but compatibility is not clear. I will not invest in true or false , just to check if it will work.

That is why i ask the forum is somene is alredy build someting similar or is aware which 5g domules are suported internaly.

The other option is mikrotik 5g router and to keep sophos as VM and route only web servers via Sophos and the rest via mikrotik, but again too complicated.

  • Hi,'

there are plenty of mini boxes available that work with XG, some have internal 5g modems, but I am not sure if they are supported.

There are suppliers in Europe and China who manufacture and supply boxes with user selectable functions.
