Sophos XG210 SFOS 18.5.3 Restore Backup to Virtual Appliance: extraction failed?

Hi, i have an XG210Rev on SFOS 18.5.3 MR-3-Build408 that i need to restore to the virtual appliance.

My appliance has also 2 RED attached and 14 Vlans.

I've downloaded the correct vm from sophos downalod (the same version, SFOS 18.5.3 MR-3-Build408) and loaded on an ESXi host and tried to restore the backup but i can't. It seems to me that the restore from a xg210 without flexi port should be ok to a virtual appliance.

I've tried adding 8, 10, 12 network cards (all VMXNET3)  but it cannot load the backup. The Passkey seems good (if i wrote it wrong the web gui complains that the format is corrupted or key is invalid)

I've tried also to check the logs and  get this error:

ERROR Jul 18 15:38:44Z [upload_restorefile:12444]: log_exec: Failed Command: /bin/mv $restorefilepath/$backupfilepath/backup.* $restorefilepath/$backupfilepath/$restorefilename
WARNING Jul 18 15:38:44Z [upload_restorefile:12444]: Action with NOFAIL Failed.

Looking better seems to fail to this command:

ERROR Jul 18 15:54:28Z [upload_restorefile:23999]: csc_execve: Child exited with status 1
ERROR Jul 18 15:54:28Z [upload_restorefile:23999]: log_exec: Failed Command: /bin/openssl enc -d -aes-256-cbc -md md5 -in $restorefilepath/$encfilename -out $restorefilepath/$bakupfilename.tgz -pass file:$file

If i try the same command on my windows machine i could decrypt the backup with no problem (where i can see that the "noofinterfaces" file contains 8, just to check if the problem was the number of network interfaces)

any hint on that??

Backup from 1U and Restore to Virtual is not supported.

You can use Import/export to workaround this, this will take some time.

  • Hello LucCar Toni,

that is not true, restoring a backup file from a 1U HW appliance to a virtual appliance is possible and according to the link it is also supported!
The only condition is that the virtual appliance must have at least the same or greater number of interfaces. Adding the necessary number of interfaces to the virtual appliance and then removing these interfaces is a 10-minute operation (including the necessary restart).

I regularly restore backup to and from the virtual appliance to the HW appliance and I have never had any problems with it.

    Regards

    alda

  • The KB states, this is not supported.

    See Matrix in the KB.
