Bricked Sophos SG210 after mandatory firmware upgrade

I have spare sg210 that was on v17 firmware (cant remember which one)  I was using it as a backup in case any of my upgrades to v18 failed.

Now I am moving everything to v19.  I wanted to use this machine as the backup on v18.5.3 so I booted it up and it said it needed to do a mandatory firmware update (it didnt tell me what to but I had no other options)

That ran and did at least one reboot but after an hour of waiting it just said Sophos protection on the front lcd panel and I couldnt connect to it so I tried a reboot.  That didnt make any difference.

So i've tried to install v18.5.3 via ISO on usb but it comes up with this:

Formatting Configuration Partitiion   .Warn: nvram init failed during partition value read.

ERROR: failed to create default /conf

Error configuring partitions

Aborting

tail: can't open '/tmp/xgs-fw-install.log':No such file or directory

tail: no files

press y to reboot

If I remove the usb boot then it goes to grub rescue>

Is there a command to try and get it to boot to the previous firmware ?

edit:

Just tried a boot without the usb key in it and its gone to grub rescue> again but this time the

error is

error: file '/grub/i386-pc/normal,mod' not found.
