Not working auto-renew at DHCP

Hi,

I'm using an Huawei Modem with LTE on wan1.

The Sophos XG receives the IP via DHCP.

Everytime when there is an IP renew it fails and the interface (wan) is offline until I login to the firewall and click on save in the interface config menu.

I'm using V19.

As I read this issue isn't new.

Did anyone find a solution which fixed this issue?

  • Hello ,

Thank you for reaching out to the community, So the WAN interface IP assignment is set to DHCP right ?
And how frequently the interface goes offline ?

Whenever it goes offline, can you try the following cmd from the device console:
console> system diagnostics utilities arp ping interface Port<no> <gateway ipaddress>

And if this works, and brings the interface online, then it could be possibly an arp issue.

Please confirm so that we can plan the next plan of action !!

    Thanks & Regards,

  • Hi,

    sorry for the late reply.

    As for the issue:

It is not an arp issue.

console> system diagnostics utilities arp ping interface Port<no> <gateway ipaddress>

did not bring the interface up.

Click on save, brought the interface up.

  • I have been struggling with the same issue on my XG105 unit.
From the forums it seems Sophos is unable to implement a simple DHCP renewal job when connection is lost.
I also had to change cable modems since on an older Thomson model the XG would grab the management interface IP instead of the Gateway IP. Not sure how it is doing that since that address supposedly doesn't broadcast DHCP and you manually have to set yourself in that IP range to access the Cable Modem GUI. In general the XG units are slow making any config changes.

I had to mark the power cable of the unit so when the WAN IP changes people can just unplug/replug the router so it RESETS the WAN IP.
    DISAPOINTING!

  • Also opened a ticket- Sophos told me, that it is normal behavoir.

Strange thing is, that these error never occured with an SG.

Maybe check the connection via script and use the API to bring the interface up.

  • I've noticed the same problem over the years, so it's disappointing to see such a fundamental issue persist. Glad to see I'm not the only one.who's found that the XG requires a reboot to renew DHCP.  Would like to see Sophos acknowledge and fix the issue.

  • Reboot is not correct. To just click the save button in the interface config does it also.

But it would be very easy to fix I think.

  • Doesn't always work, sometimes that causes the interface to lockup and look like it is dead.
