Trying to install XG Home on XG 115 rev.2 appliance

I've recently gotten an XG 115 rev.2 off eBay and have tried to install the XG Home version software on it (SW-19.0.0_GA-317.iso), but cannot get it to work.

I've tried all of the following and cannot get it to work:

- The ubuntu method here (https://hifish.ch/en/2022/03/20/sophos-xg-home-on-a-sophos-appliance/) where I fully installed Ubuntu in hopes of it updating the MBR during the partitioning. Fully installed Ubuntu, and still got the "detected sophos physical device please get proper installation source" error.

- I tried this (https://community.sophos.com/sophos-xg-firewall/f/discussions/119814/xg-home-on-xg-115-rev3-appliance) several times where I deleted all the partitions, created an ext4 and a fat32 partition and neither would work.

- Also tried this (https://community.sophos.com/sophos-xg-firewall/f/discussions/96731/install-xg-home-on-xg-appliance---how-to) several times and couldn't get it to work.

So, now I'm thinking the next step is to swap out the SSD to get it to work but I REALLY don't want to have to do that, especially because so many people on here and on Reddit are saying it's not necessary.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

  • Do you have an old laptop disk with a Sata interface regardless of size try using that. If it is a large one it will take a long time to format during installation.

  • Just found an old 320GB HDD from an old laptop and put it into the XG and it's installing now! It's not an SSD so we'll have to see how much of a performance hit I take on the Web GUI. The SSD that was in the appliance was a Transcend 6GB/Sec SSD and they go for about $90 USD online which is more than I paid for the appliance altogether. And looking further into it, 6GB/sec SSDs aren't really cheap in general. I'm still going to tinker around with how to get the original SSD fully wiped.

  • I figured it out!!! So I booted from a live gparted USB again and started googling around for disk erase commands for Debian Linux and came across the wipefs command. So I did a "wipefs -a /dev/sda1" and put it back in the appliance and viola!, it allowed to me install the home edition XG software. So it looks like doing the wipefs command to delete the disk's signature was the fix for me.

  • Thanks a bunch for posting the answer, helped me out with the same issue.
