Sophos XG, any recommendations? And some questions.

Hey guys!

I'm interested in replacing our Sonicwall with an XG. I'm not familiar with Sophos and just have a few newbie questions. Note: I don't have an IT background, but was able to figure out how to configure our Sonicwall NSA220W and previously a Fortigate 60D and 40C.

  1. As I said, we are currently using a Sonicwall NSA220W with no performance issues using Via App Rules Content Filtering, Antivirus and Intrusion Protection (though we did have issues with Zone based content filtering.) Specs-wise the XG 105W looks identical (and more) to the NSA220W minus the 7 Gbe ports. Our office has 50 employees and around 30 concurrent internet users on average at a time. We only do browsing and email and most non-business related sites are blocked. As such, we don't really need a high bandwidth. We actually just use a 30/30mbps fiber line and 2 dsl that are 15/1mbps and 11/1mbps for backups. Would the XG 105W work for our setup https://1921681254.mx/ ? I was also thinking about the XG 115W.

  2. The 105/115 has 4 ports and we have 3 internet connections here at the office, is it possible to assign 3 WAN and load-balance/failover between them? Essentially I'm just wondering if I can reassign the DMZ port to a WAN port similar to what I did with our Sonicwall.

  3. I'm assuming it's possible to route a lan host ip to a specific wan? I'm routing our CCTV DVR feeds to one of our backup dsl lines.

  4. Can you recommend an online reseller aside from Amazon?

Thank you in advance for any replies.

  • Hello there,

Thank you for contacting the Sophos Community.

I would recommend you to reach out to one of our Partners, so they can assist you with this; find the Partner closer to your region at the following link https://partners.sophos.com/english/directory/ also they can put you in touch with a Sales Engineer to help you with your migration if need it.

    As per your questions:

    1. I would go with a XG116w

    2. XG116w is a newer model and has 8 Ports, and yes you can configure 3 of them as WAN, and you can do Failover/Load Balance

    3. Yes, you can do this using SDWAN & Routing, to send specific traffic from a host via a dedicated link

  • We still have to rely on the rather "old" XG Szing guide (2017) for this, because there is no newer document I know of.

This guide recommends as minimum an XG125 for about 30 Users with said usage. I would translate this to a XG126.

Mit freundlichem Gruß, best regards from Germany,

  • Actually there is a sizing Tool.

A Sizing Guide based on User is not state of the art. (Basically user is out of date for 10 years).

It depends on the traffic and not user.
