Intel Atom CPU - C3358 XG v19

Good evening,

Looking at a hardware refresh, but looking to achieve something low powered.  I'm currently using a PondDesk based unit with a E3845 on Untangle (watching Arista's aquasition), but looking to return to Sophos XG that I previously had running on a Dell PowerEdge R220 unit.

My connection is Virgin Media 100/10 cable, but will move to a FTTP setup as soon as I'm able in my area, sadly probaby 18 months away at least, so I'd return to a 70/20 Vodafone ADSL setup.

With the latest v19 Sophos XG, will the Atom I'm looking at be suitable?  The reason why I ran Sophos XG on my R220 previously was due to the UI being quite slow.

Many thanks,

Mike

  • Hi Mike,

the C3358 will be okay, but that will depend on your number of devices and rules etc.

  • Probably 10 rules and 30-40 devices, the bulk of them IoT.

Apple TV, TrueNas and Sky boxes will be the bigger “users”.

been looking on eBay too for Sophos XG units - XG230 v2 listed

  • Hi Mike,

I sent you an update PM. My system runs approx 40 rules due the the dual stack. The v19 is a slightly heavier resource user than previous versions though not much.

XG230 would be nice, though the CPU is getting a bit old, 2015 release and dual core but fast.

  • Hi Ian,

Many thanks.  I went a different route in the end, I've purchased a XG230 v2 via bankrupt stock, so hopefully it's not a paperweight.  My plan is to wipe the disk and install v19 XG on it with my home license.  Equally I'd be interested in what the actual costs of licensing it is, I can't get an answer out of a UK partner, which is quite frustrating.  The unit cost me £350.

I hope I can transfer the license, but I doubt it as I expect Sophos will want authorisation from the orginal owner etc.

Indeed a bit old and probably similar age to the Dell PowerEdge R220 I've got, but I'm going to be having a clear out of kit.  I'll probably keep the Atom unit as my Untangle license has a year left on it and I'm interested to see what Arista are doing.  I'm more interested in Sophos as I prefer the granularity of the configuration potential and I'm more likely to see one when working compared to Untangle etc.

  • Hello Mike,

you can only get a "software version" of the Sophos XG Firewall Home Edition.

    Have a look here: https://www.sophos.com/en-us/free-tools/sophos-xg-firewall-home-edition

This means you have two options: run the software installer on your XG230 or buy a commercial license (only the modules you need),

wich would start with the basic firewall and so on.

Have a look here for the available modules: https://docs.sophos.com/nsg/sophos-firewall/18.0/Help/en-us/webhelp/onlinehelp/AdministratorHelp/Administration/Licensing/index.html

  • Hi,

Yes I am aware of the software version for XG home as that is what I'm running at the moment, but on other hardware.  I'll be looking for a quote from a UK Partner (that actually responds) for the XG unit, failing that I'll wipe it and put XG Home onto the unit.

    Best regards,

    Mike

  • Hello Mike,

XG Home license is free, what is the quote you are waiting for?

  • Hi Phillip,

he is investigating the cost of running a commercial licence in preference to a limited function home licence.

  • Hi, that's what I wanted to hear from Mike, but ok.

We are a Sophos partner, I can quote this, if you want.

We do remote installs and support from Ohio to Shengzen, so why not using a partner from Germany?

  • With regards to FTTP, we had a Rev 2 XG 230 and found it maxed out at about 700 Mb/s. It always depends on your config but I suspect our usage was similar to what you are planning. I can't see why you would want more than that but if you go for the full 900Mb/s FTTC, there is a good chance you won't get full speed.

Not really sure why you want to go down the commercial licence path if this is genuinely for home use but bear in mind that all XG models are now EOL and software support ends in 2025. This wouldn't affect a home licence, just hardware specific commercial licences.
