Interface speed autonegotation getting downsized

Hi *

I have a software based Sophos Firewal with 4 Interfaces. This month I changed from DSL to Fibre which allows me to speed up my browsing ;-)

Changing WAN connection was not a big deal, but my interface - lying on Port2 - has some trouble by properly autonegotiating the speed of the interface!
Once I set this to auto the connection is at 1 Gbps speed, after a while the speed is redefined to 100 Mbps. Sure i can set this to static 1 Gbps but I really love to keep it running with autonegotiation at full speed!

Is there any way to troubleshoot this behaviour by monitoring logs?

The setup with DSL had a direct LAN connection to my modem. Since my fibre converter is not located near firewall any longer, I have to connect Port2 interface from the firewall to the fibre convert LAN interface through CAT-cable connection. Sophos Firewall: Best practices tells me that is recommended to use switch and not crossover cable. This may be the issue here.

Thanks in advance for your support!

  • Hi Ian,

    it is Intel I211AT

  • forgot to mention: FW is 18.5.3

  • The Nic should be able to negotiate and maintain a 1 gb connection, maybe the cable is faulty?

  • I will switch LAN-cable this evening, if issue persist there could be an issue with the CAT-cable. In this case I may set a static interface speed ;-)

  • I found the article i read before Where is logging for interface negotiation history? - Discussions - Sophos Firewall - Sophos Community

syslog gave me hints about negotiation and Port2 getting Down and Up without reason for me?

  • monitored the behaviour over the past week, negotiation is stable now but I didn't do any change.
